Not really... own? Islands who raise our flag are under our protection. We collect a fee, but we protect them from other pirates, or any kind of crime or trouble that could happen under that banner.

That sounds like you're your own form of government. Is your world one where pirates aren't running from the law?

It's not that. We're in a stretch of the ocean the government doesn't really rule over--too dangerous waters. So most of the islands there are split between what people call the "Four Emperors of the Sea"--the four most powerful pirate crews that oppose the world government.

Emperors... that does sound like a challenge against the government, if I ever heard one. You're part of one of those four crews, I take it.

For a while now. Bounty's at... Five hundred and fifty million, last I checked. At that level, bounty hunters don't try their luck anymore.
